Mr ACTIVE @ Everest Base Camp

Trekking up to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) is no easy task. One has to be physically fit and mentally strong to conquer all the challenges that come along the way.

Look! That looked like Mr ACTIVE!!!

Nothing is impossible for Mr ACTIVE! Taking one step at a time and hanging on till the end, Mr ACTIVE also reached EBC!

IMPOSSIBLE = I M POSSIBLE!

The trek up to EBC is definitely something that I am proud to do. I made the right decision to go.

Some of us fell sick along the way up and guess what saved the day? Tiger Balm!!! And we didn’t have to worry if we ran out of Tiger Balm because at more than 3000m above sea level, the shops do sell Tiger Balm!!!

It was definitely a surprise for me to see Tiger Balm high up in the mountains. For those who were uncomfortable, Tiger Balm made them better and we were in time to enjoy the wonderful scenery!

EW Barker Race 2012

Last Friday, we stayed in school for the annual EW Barker Race. It is a 4 x 600m relay run around the NIE Triangle. Did we win? Is that important? Well, what was really important was that we represented Class 3B and we had fun!

$2 for a McChicken burger or a Double Cheeseburger is something of the past. Ever since McDonald’s extended the promotion for the Extra Value Meals to the whole day, prices for McChicken burger and Double Cheeseburger had gone up too at $3 plus.

Some how we are made to believe that the Extra Value Meals are really value for money and it will be better to buy a meal rather than a burger. I will definitely miss the day when I popped in and grab a $2 Double Cheeseburger just because I felt like it.

First night in Kathmandu

I went to Nepal last year and I trekked up to the Everest Base Camp. We flew by Thai Airways - Singapore >>> Bangkok >>> Kathmandu. It was a long flight and because we had to be at the airport at 6am, I was really sleepy and tired by the time we landed at Kathmandu. The picture above was taken as we were about to land, not too sure what mountain this is but hey, it sure is cool to see this before you land.

It took forever to clear the custom, well, 1 hour to be exact. We had to queue to pay for the visa and then joined another queue to get that chop on our passports. We were greeted by a lot of ‘helpful’ locals who attempted to help us with our luggage and expected tips. Of course there are not many free meals in the world, so we were aware of this.

We got on the van and were ferried to Hotel Shanker, probably the best hotel around. It was a great contrast to the streets outside. With the messy traffic and tons of motorcycles, one can imagine how bad the air and noise pollution can get. There is even a swimming pool in Hotel Shanker…

The water was cold… very cold…

We put our luggage in our rooms and we went out to get our gears. Remember I said the traffic was messy and the bad air? We have to brave through these elements to get to the gear shop.

Lots of things to see! Things that we don’t get to see in Singapore anymore. We were also greeted by a group of friendly schoolgirls.

The temperature was 19 degree Celsius and as night fell, it got even colder.

While getting our gears, we were approached by gentlemen persuading us to buy their products. Some made Chapati, some sold fruits and some sold Kacang Puteh!

We went back to the hotel to leave our gears before heading out for dinner. Tired. Hungry. I was.

I forgot the name but we went to this restaurant for dinner. There was performance and all I could remember was that the food took forever to come.

Very tired. Very hungry. Very cold. I was.

I only managed to take photos of these two dishes, fried potatoes and Momo!

Around three weeks ago, 22nd December 2011, a group of outdoor adventurers met at Changi Airport Terminal 1 in the early morning for our flight to Nepal.

All ready to set off for an adventure into the Himalayas and trek and trek and trek. This was a photo before we left, all looking fresh and CLEAN!!!!

We started the next day with a cultural tour! We visited a few temples along Chao Phraya River. And the best way to get to them is via the ferry!

And look at that! That is Wat Arun and there is a Prang (Khmer style tower) at the back of the temple. Visitors must must must attempt to climb up at least once.

Not everybody was able to make it for the workplan but 9 of us made good use of the time we had.

We looked back and planned forward, hopefully 2012 will be a superb year for everyone!

After doing a bit of cardio, I headed off to the streets for something to munch while the rest of the ‘kids’ were still sleeping.

The first thing I saw was the toasted bread. Very simple stuff, butter and sugar were all it took to make it.

I wanted to try the fried flour dough but I forgot… I guess it would taste like our You Tiao. Maybe next time.

The market was full of hustle and bustle. One can find all the fruits (almost), vegetables and meats here.

The tip to find good food is simple – just follow the queues. Whenever you see a food stall and long queue, the food must be good.

I wanted to try all the food and fruits but there were too many things to savour. Some looked really good and some looked really ‘interesting’.

Special mentions to the glutinous rice thing that I ate. It was really tasty and somehow different from the ones we can find in Singapore.

And you can find many of this push carts selling coffee on the streets. It is cheap and good, some could be probably as good as Starbucks or even better. Probably.

Great to see mountains of fruits but too bad I couldn’t eat all of them.

So for me, the first thing that I did was to check out the hotel gym. We stayed at Novotel Fenix Silom and everything was pretty new. Small gym with limited equipment and the pool is even smaller.

The pool is definitely great to soak in but not ‘shiok’ to swim in. From one end to another, one will only need two strokes or maybe three. But you get to enjoy the view from the surrounding – not fantastic but better than nothing.

On 14th Dec 2011, the good people from Tampines Changkat Youth Executive Committee (YEC) took Tiger Airways to Bangkok for our workplan. There were rounds of discussion on ways to make things better for our community. And looking back, we also aim to carry out our successful events better and more impactful in the new year.

Today is the first day participants can collect their race pack for the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2011. And boy oh boy oh boy, at 10am, there were already a lot of people and the queues just got longer and longer. It definitely proved that Kiasu-ism is very much alive in this island!

Well, to be fair, the queues were long but we were moving forward all the while. Hence, the waiting time was not that long, still acceptable.

Tiger Balm has a booth here as well! Runners who need a muscle rub or two can conveniently pick the Tiger Balm ACTIVE range of products from the booth. And if you spend $30 or more, you get a cute Tiger pencil case!

Some time back, I wanted to become a Pacer for Team BMW. But somehow or rather, I didn’t managed to do so. Surprisingly, Team BMW prepared special gifts for runners who registered with them. And it came in a white box with Team BMW tee, a running belt, a cap and a wrist band!

Now I am ready for the marathon, can’t wait for Sunday morning to be here! ^^V

Hello Ramona!

Ramona Braganza was in Singapore and we got to meet her in person. The session was ‘Train the Trainers’ and other than Fitness trainers who were present, we (PESS students) were there as well.

Ramona is a celebrity trainer who trains many Hollywood stars such as Jessica Alba and Halle Berry. She has a special fitness formula – 321 Training Method – which combines Cardio training, Circuit strength training and Core training.

We tried out the 321 Training Method and it was something new for many of us. Remona also shared her life story, her experiences with training and even handling clients.

Remona was also nice to give out her Dvds to those who volunteered to do the workout and that included ME!

Thank you Coca Cola Singapore for bringing Remona to Singapore and have her shared her experiences with us. We hope to see her soon!

Nikon AW1000, I choose You!

In Singapore, we don’t really experience the four seasons like in other countries - it is either wet, dry, hot or hotter.

However, there is something that will definitely takes place every 3 months – IT Fairs! SITEX, IT Show, PC Show, and COMEX. In a way or another, they have became seasonally and it is a must-do and must-go event for most people here in Singapore.

Now, I need a camera for Mount Everest. So it has to be something that is weather proof and most importantly, cold proof! I played with Nikon AW1000 yesterday and liked it! It served my purposes and I realised I could take photos with my gloves on.

So, my final choice would be you, Nikon AW1000!

When I first got my Samsung Galaxy Tab, I was really impressed by Swype – all I need to do is to swipe my finger to key in words. Swype simply makes keying words into my Tab easier and faster.

Now I found out there is another app which is even better and that is TouchPal!

There is prediction for the word that I swiped and I can even choose to key in words using my voice. Wow… I tried and it worked perfectly!

Since I don’t have to spell out the words myself, I hope I don’t get dumb with this app.

ECO Music Challenge Season 2

I received a copy of the album from the ECO Music Challenge Season 2. There are 15 eco-songs written by local talents and that includes “World Without Fences”, the Clean & Green Singapore 2012 theme song.

Yup, you should have heard this on the TV by now. “World Without Fences” is the winning song for this season. It starts with the light strumming on the guitar and the gentle voice of Robert Sunga.

After listening to all the songs on the album, my personal favourite is still “World Without Fences”, although “Take a Stand” and “Set Her Free” are pretty good as well.

The message behind the music challenge is to promote GREENESS – doing our part to save the environment. We all have a role to determine what kind of world our future generations live in.

And it is amazing, from one music challenge, how much talented people we can find. We do have talented Singaporeans who write and create great music and people who sing well. The songs covered several genres – Rock “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, Jazzy “Save Our Earth” and you can definitely dance to “Set Her Free”.

I bet the contestants had a great time learning from their mentor, Mr Clement Chow and knowing one another. It is always encouraging to meet like-minded people and know that it is worth what you can fighting for.

You may want to give this album a try and get it online or from the NEA Customer Service Centre.

On that ING NYC Marathon morning…

I woke up early as I was quite excited about the marathon. The sky was brightening slowly and the Hudson river seems to cheer on for me.

I packed my stuff into the transparent bag provided and brought it with me to the Starting point.

There were like thousands of people already at the South Ferry Terminal, all ready to run!

To accommodate 47,000 runners, you can imagine how many mobile toilets they have.

The sun is out but it is still very cold.

From the Staten Island, you can see the impressive skyline of Manhattan. Amazing.

We still need to take a bus to get to the starting point. Took a while and turned here and there.

Finally, the Start Village.

The power bars, mineral water, coffee from Dunkin Donuts and hot tea were free for all. It is like an all-you-can-eat buffet kind of thing but of course, a serious runner won’t do that.

ING New York City Marathon - DONE!

Alrighty, so I have finished the run and completed my mission here. The supporters were totally amazing and the weather was great – but too cold for me. I ran for 4 hours 30 minutes but I thought it could have been better.

Maybe I spent too much time in the mobile toilets because of a rumbling tummy – too much cold air. Luckily I brought along with me the Tiger Balm ACITVE Muscle Spray with to ease the soreness in my legs. I also shared it with the other runners too!

There were many hurdles to clear before the run – finding suitable food, getting used to the time change, getting to the starting point, depositing my luggage. There are many different cuisines here but sourcing for suitable food is not easy. The easiest way would be to go to McDonald’s which is relatively cheaper than most of the other delicatessens.

Time change was something that caught me by surprise. I didn’t know about this until last night. I mean, I would have made my way earlier to the Ferry Terminal at 8am but because of the time change, the 8am is not 9am. Confusing? Go Google!

Then, after reaching Staten Island, we still had to take a shuttle bus and go round and round and round. That took like 20 minutes and luckily I got myself a seat.

Lots of people moved around the Start Village and there were so many things to look out for. I almost missed my chance to deposit my luggage with Team for Kids. The closing time was 9.20am and I got there around 9am but I was figuring out where to go.

Waiting for the marathon to start was challenging too – cold wind. Very very cold. I had an additional shirt but that was not enough. Something to take note if I am coming back next year.

Somebody sang “God Bless America” before the run and I think maybe we can consider singing something like that in Singapore. Maybe “Majulah Singapura”?

And here we go…

The weather was great, spirits were high and there were a lot of excitements. The skyline of Manhattan from Staten Island was amazing and superb.

There were many supporters along the way, cheering for everyone. Kids were extending out their hands, waiting for someone to hi-five with them. People also shouted out, “Go ACTIVE!”, “Great Job, ACTIVE”, “Stay ACTIVE” to me. They must have thought that my name is ACTIVE, maybe they also saw that I already changed my name to Steven ACTIVE Goh on Facebook!

Supporters were also handing out candies, chocolates, water, Gatorade to runners. They were not stingy with their cheering and food. And as we ran through the different boroughs, it was obvious that they are proud of their own neighbourhoods. It will be great if residents in the different towns in Singapore can exhibit the same passion and love. There were also live bands performing throughout the run. Lots of music and lots of cheers.

There were runners from everywhere. France, Uruguay, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Germany… 47,000 of us! Maybe we can have more Singaporeans running this marathon next year. And more Singaporean supporters too!

Overall, I must say it was an awesome experience – doing ‘big business’ at the super duper yucky mobile toilets, tahan-ing the cold weather, being cheered and inspired by the passionate crowd, drinking tons of Gatorade, enjoying the Power Gel and banana.

A great way to see New York City and an amazing way to achieve another Finishers’ Medal.

Finally, the reason why I am here in New York, the ING NYC Marathon is going to take place today.

I got two timing strips – 3 hr 30 min and 4 hr 5 min. I wanted to get the 4 hr strip but it was all given out. Seems like many people want to run within this timing.

Nonetheless, I have more or less gotten use to the weather here. But I still hope that the wind is not that strong later, otherwise, it will be really chilly…

Shooting with the German Tigers

Day Two at New York started with shooting with the Team Tiger Balm from Germany! We just walked out of the hotel and boomz, there’s Times Square!

So we did some shots here and immersed in the great atmosphere. It was 9am and the whole place was full of vibrancy and life. There were dancers filming a music video and there were people queuing up for discounted broadway musicals.

There’s a bus with the ING New York City Marathon ad and “I thought I saw a TIGER!”

Important reminder for all ING New York City Marathon runners!! Dalylight Saving Time ends at 2am tomorrow morning! This means that 2am is turned backward 1 hour to 1am.

Confusing?

If you are in the first wave aka starting at 8.45am, based on today’s time, you should be starting at 9.45am instead. Don’t think too much and you shall not be confused.

Walking around the Big Apple

When you walk around the Big Apple, you can’t help but to take lots of photos. The buildings are a mixture of old and new and they fused together perfectly.

Midtown feels like a huge Orchard Road and the heart of all happenings is at the Times Square. That is where I am staying! ^^V

ING NYC Marathon Race Pack

Like any Race Pack in the world for marathon, the Race Pack for the ING New York City Marathon is the same.

Lots of vouchers and flyers. But what is uniquely ING NYC Marathon is the event tee with the name printed on it. And that is why I am here, to add the ING NYC Marathon tee into my collection.

I also purchased my transportation to Staten Islands tomorrow morning. My ferry will departs at 8am sharp and I shall be early for the run. I am in the third wave which starts at 10.45am.

Kind of surprised that the run starts later since the marathons in Singapore start at 5am. Well, the weather here is different – it is so much cooler, hence, it is alright to start later.

This gives more time to prepare myself and to get to the starting point in time. Remember that the ING NYC Marathon covers the five boroughs of New York? Therefore, in order to cover all of them, we have to go to the one borough which is furthest away.

Today was spent shooting with the German Tigers and we hit many iconic landmarks in NYC. Watch out for it in the upcoming post!

Staying at Times Square for 3 nights

Collecting my race pack

Once I reached my hotel, I immediately threw everything down and rushed to collect my race pack at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. It is a few blocks away, definitely within walkable distance from the hotel.

There were a lot of people from everywhere - runners and volunteers from all over the world are here to run the marathon.

There were a lot of ING New York City Marathon merchandise to buy. More photos coming up. There are so much to do and see here.

Ok, I got to go and see the city now. More updates in a while.

Singapore to New York

It was a long long flight from Singapore to New York, almost 24 hours. All I can say is for long flight like this, we only eat, drink, sleep, watch inflight entertainment system, eat, drink, and repeat everything all over again.
I took SQ 26 and the food were fantastic. Simply delicious!!! Yummy!! Too bad they didn’t serve ice cream, otherwise, it will be even better!

It took around 12 hours for us to get to Frankfurt and gosh, Frankfurt is cold too!!

So we stopover for around 1.5 hours and we had to go through the security clearance again. I guess, especially for USA, we have to play safe.

Singapore Airlines is really a great way to fly and being away from home, it was assuring to hear Singaporean accents. The lah leh loh that I hear always make me feel at home when I am not.

Here we go again, the second part of the journey. And here came the lifesaver, the flight attendant with the hot towels. One wipe and all tiredness is gone (for a while). But I could tell that it is not easy to be a SQ flight attendant. After towels, you got to clear the towels. Then serve drinks, then clear drinks. Then serve snacks, then clear snacks. Get it?
And they must always maintain a smile on their faces.

I didn’t sit beside the winow but I also manage to take some “sky” photos. This could be the best IES if not the fact that SQ’s KrisFlyer is really good.

I must mention the crepe that was served to me - it was very very delicious that I even ‘begged’ for a second serving.

And I met the German Tigers on the plane. I didn’t know we were flying together until Jules saw the Tiger Balm ACTIVE windbreaker that I was wearing.
Unfortunately, I lost them after I cleared the custom first. I wasn’t feeling too good and I needed the toilet, so I went to search for one. By the time I went back, they were gone.
So, I sticked to my plan – to take the subway from the airport to midtown

I missed one train and had to wait 25 minutes for the next one to come. And it was very very cold… Suddenly I thought of our own MRT – our MRT is actually not too bad.
So I took the Subway to 42nd St where the famous T _ M _ S S _ _ A _ E S is.

Packing for New York

Time to pack for New York! I mean, I am leaving tomorrow night so it is now or never.

I am definitely bringing the Tiger Balm ACTIVE range of products with me. For me, I will use the spray on the go while the rub and gel can be used anytime. They are extremely useful to warm up the muscles before the run and to ease soreness after the run! Must have these!

If the above items look familiar to you, yup, they were from the North Face 100’s goodies bag! On race day, I think I will drink Milo to kick start the day.

I got these base layers for my Everest trip. Since New York is getting cold, I think it will be quite timely to try them out!

By 2015, our Sports Hub should be up and ready for any kind of sporting events (almost). So the bid to host the 2015 South-East Asian Games is very timely.

Between 1948 – 1960, our athletes were imported by other countries to play for them and we achieved great performance in sports such as badminton and weightlifting.

We have missed our turn once and I really hope that we will win the bid. Singaporeans can be united through sports and I believe we can return to the golden age.

Mizuno works best for me but not necessarily for you. It is important for runners to try out the shoes before buying them. Try to walk or jog around the shop (if possible) to test them out.

Didn’t get to do much training over the weekend as I was away for a camp. It has been a long while since I did anything like this and it was a really good experience – made new friends and opened my horizon.

Come to think of it, I did so much of these outdoor stuff all the time. Because of work, ya ya ya… I know it is just an excuse, I have spent less time of it.

I hope that the trip to Mount Everest will be a good start to do all these outdoor activities again.

RIP Yue Yue

Yue Yue, two year-old, was ran over by two vehicles in Foshan, Guangdong, PRC. 18 passer-bys walked passed her and none attempted to move her away or called for help.

A rubbish collector, the 19th passer-by to see Yue Yue on the floor, eventually moved her to the side and called for help. Unfortunately, Yue Yue’s injuries were too serious and she didn’t make it.

As for the rubbish collector, she also left Foshan as she couldn’t take the attraction on her. There were even people who felt that she helped Yue Yue because she wants to be famous and maybe get some money from somewhere.

It is unfortunate to see fellow human beings behaving like this. I seriously hope that our society will not degrade till this level. No matter how competitive we are, how results orientated we are, we should always spare a thought for one another.

RIP Yue Yue.

5 Simple steps to completing a marathon

Great, you've signed up for a big race but do you have any idea how to complete it in a way that won’t leave
you suffering for days afterwards? Below are a few key points you can use to put in place the structure you
need to reach your goal.

1. Determine Your Current Fitness Level
Most physicians check a few key metrics when you go for your annual check-up. Blood pressure, heart rate and
temperature among others depending on your age and medical history. Similarly, there are a couple of key
things you should measure if you want to know your current physical fitness:

a. Lactate Threshold – Whenever you exercise at light intensities, your body produces and clears lactate acid.
As the intensity increases there comes a point when you are no longer able to clear it and it overflows into
your bloodstream where it will quickly fatigue your muscles. The goal of training is to improve your ability
to clear lactate acid at higher and higher intensities over time. The lactate threshold test is a 30 minute test
consisting of 5 x 5 minute stages each at increasing intensity. During the 1 minute rest between each stage, a
small finger prick blood sample is taken and analysed. From this your lactate threshold and training intensity
heart rate zones can be established.

b. Fuel Efficiency – Fat provides twice as much energy per gram as carbohydrate and you can store 50,000
calories of fat in the body while only 2,500 calories of carbohydrate. By improving your body’s ability to use fat
as energy, you will not only be able to manage your weight effortlessly, you will be able to maintain a higher
pace for longer time. The fuel efficiency test is a 20 minute test that looks at how your body uses energy and
from this your ideal heart rate range for burning fat can be established.

2. Plan Early
Your success lies in coming up with (and executing) an effective training plan. A marathon training plan should
be from 16 – 20 weeks in duration, depending on your experience level and should have a minimum of 4 runs
per week for beginners through to 6 runs per week for more experienced runners. Will you fail if you don’t
apply these numbers? No, not necessarily, but your chances of becoming injured, ill or not racing at your best
go up dramatically. Ask for the help of a coach or more experienced runner if you are not confident to put a
plan together yourself.

3. Train the Right Intensity at the Right Time
This may surprise you, but a marathon is not a “fast” event. Even for the elite running under 2 hr 10 mins, this
is not a fast pace compared to what they can run for 5km or 10km. You need to reflect this in your training and
only show your body the pace at which you hope to complete the event. Any faster, and your body will not
understand what you want it to do. Your body is a machine so it is up to you to programme it correctly.

4. Get Comfy Gear
A marathon is a long distance and the training is tough. Be sure that you invest in the right gear so that you are
as comfortable as possible during training and the event. Here are a few things you will need:

a. Shoes – Make sure that you invest in a good quality pair of running shoes that suit your foot type. If you are
unsure on your foot type there is plenty of information online and you can ask the sales assistant at your local
shop (although take their advice carefully)
.
b. Socks – Having a good pair of socks will help reduce the chances of blisters and abrasions.

c. Shorts & Singlet - Choose something with minimal seams so that you avoid abrasions and for guys, the dreaded bloodied nipples.

d. Heart Rate Monitor - A heart rate monitor may be the best investment you ever make but only if you know
how to use it. Generic formulas to calculate heart rate are not effective so make sure you invest in a round of
testing (see point 1 above) to establish your ideal training intensity zones.

5. Warming up and cooling down
Whenever you are taking part in any sport warming up before and cooling down after are two vitally important
parts exercise to ensure against sustaining any injury. When competing in such an intense activity like the
marathon this is of greater significance as your body is enduring a continued strain for a prolonged period of
time, so adequate preparation and cool down is vital to make sure you do not sustain any injury.

a. Warm up – This is done to prepare your body for the activity you are about to undertake. The warm up

should focus on the muscles that are about to be used in the physical activity. Tiger Balm ACTIVE Muscle

So, how do I do it?

It is very simple. All you need to do is to double twist the free ends together before tying the knot.

Ben & Jerry’s CHUNKFEST 2011

Fortunately for us, we managed to secure a FairBooth during B&J’s ChunkFest 2011!! We were raising fund for Boys Town as they really need the Moo-lah to build a new hostel for the boys.

Our booth’s name was “Share A SMILE” and we sold traditional toys, soft toys, tee shirts and lots of balloons.

So while we were getting our FairBooth ready, B&J’s peeps were briefing their platoon of volunteers. They really got a lot of help! ^^

It is only during ChunkFest then can we try out flavours that are usually not available in Singapore. They got to be flew in all the way from Vermont, USA – Vermont’s Finest!

There were many games for people to try such as the “Pin the Pint” (putting the pieces together while being blindfolded) and “Pint Dunkin” (if the ball hit the metal rod, somebody is going to get wet).

There were music throughout the whole event and you know what, they were performed by local bands. Cool huh… Other than enjoying the ice creams, we got entertained by local talents!

B&J’s merchandise were also on sales! Oh man… they were MOO-ly good!!!

Crossfit Workshop @ Physical ABuse

I attended a CrossFit Workshop at Physical ABuse the other day and it sure was a fruitful session. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme which contains different stations – targeting different parts of the body. It is carried out over one minute (or more as you progress) per station and after completing all the stations, 5 minutes rest and then you go again.

There were ten stations and the trainers at Physical ABuse started out by demonstrating the correct movements that should be executed.

Then, we have to do an important task – WARM UP. Warming up is very important as it prepares our body for the physical activity that we are about to do. It also reduces the possibilities of injuries as well.

Then, we started the programme and the trainers were around to assist and provide guidance. I would say that CrossFit is a good workout to complement marathon training. It hits the whole body and is adds spices to the running programme that I have.

Lastly, the MOST important thing to do – WARMING DOWN.

I prefer the term “warming down” rather than “cooling down” because after a physical activity, you are all warmed up and so, you should “warm down”.

If warming down is carried out properly and sufficiently, one will recover and be ready for the next physical activity. Anytime.

It has been raining in the morning for the past few days. I had wanted to go to Bedok Reservoir to run but was really really tired. Only managed to do 30 minutes of cardio before I called it a day.

When I have class at 8.30am, I will have to walk up at 6am to get ready and leave my house by 6.30am.

That was what happened today. Maybe I should consider staying in the hostel instead.

Well… I didn’t get to run the Nike Run this morning because I was too slow in registering for it.There were only 3000 slots for each category and BOOMZ they were all taken up.

Nonetheless, I still managed to clock 20km today. It was at a comfortable pace of 10km/hr plus minus and I enjoyed it!

Not much time left till the New York City Marathon but I am sure I will be able to prepare myself well for it.

Now back to my assignments… ^^V

‘Fitness Spa’ @ Racers’ Toolbox

I was at Racers’ Toolbox this afternoon for two tests – Lactate test and Fat Burning Test. And here’s a short clip of what I got to do for the Lactate test.

For the Fat Burning test, I had to put on a mask to run.

And here are the results…

Fot the Lactate test, I had to run on the treadmill for 5 sets of 5 minutes with 1 minute of break in between. The speed that I ran are 10km/hr, 11km/hr, 12km/hr, 13km/hr and 14km/hr.

Lactic acid is produced in our body all the time but it will be more significant when we exercise. When this happens, our ability to perform (in this case, running) will be affected.

Hence, from the graph above, the effects from Lactic acid affects me from 13km/hr. A good speed for me to maintain running the 26.2miles would be 11km/hr – 12km/hr.

Fat is always the best choice of energy source when we run a marathon. This is simply because we have a lot of fats as compared to the other sources such as carbohydrates and proteins. For the Fat burning test, I ran on the treadmill from 6km/hr to 14km/hr progressively over 20 minutes.

We were looking at the speed of 11km/hr to 12km/hr that we identified earlier on from the Lactate test. From the graph above, fat was the ultimate source of energy at this range of speed and this is good.

Doing the tests at Racers’ Toolbox was interesting. I didn’t know about my conditions until I took the tests. Now I know better what kinds of trainings I should focus on.

Pizza Hut’s FUN MEAL!

We went to help grandma to clean and repaint one of the rooms in her house. The lady who rented a room from grandma moved out after 13 years. Gosh!!! That’s so long!

Anyway, that lady, she left a huge mess in the room. She even cooked inside the room when there is a kitchen in the house. Hence, there are black stains on the wall where she her cooking.

There were dusts all over the places and some even solidified!!! Tsk tsk…

It wasn’t easy cleaning. The painting part was even worse. But somehow, we did it. And we rewarded ourselves with pizzas!!!!

The FUN MEAL comes with warmly toasted Tortilla chips & Cheese, Chicken Karaage and 1 Cheesy Bite Treats which was upsized to the LARGE one. And we ordered another LARGE Hawaiian pizza too!!!

Think we should do more of this. ^^V

He was a Greek messenger who was dispatched by his Athenian general in 490 BC to request aid from Sparta in fighting the invading Persian Army.

Marathon was the name of a town in ancient Greece and Pheidippides was tasked to run from Marathon to Anthens (25 miles). When he reached Anthen, he shouted “NIKE!” (victory) and then dropped dead.

The 25-mile marathon was included in the first modern Olympic Games in Anthen. It was only when the Olympic Games was held in London in 1908, then did the the distance became 26.2 miles. The reason for this was to accommodate the location of the Queen’s viewing box.

Outing to the Marina Barrage

It was a beautiful Saturday morning.

We left Tampines at around 9am for the Marina Barrage. Today is an outing with…

… our wheelchair bound friends.

For many of them, this was their first visit to the Marina Barrage.

We took many photos for and with them.

Auntie Mary is a very cheerful old lady who always have a ‘Words Search’ book with her. Either that or a ‘Sudoku’ book.

Another auntie said, “I am very happy. Today I get to come to the Marina Barrage and I get to see so many people. Otherwise, today will be another Saturday for me, doing the same old things at home.”

It was my N visit to Marina Barrage but this time round, I had a different feeling. I thank my friends for giving me the chance to visit Marina Barrage with them and made my Saturday morning a meaningful one.

As much as I fear the cold, I want to challenge myself and go for the Everest Base Camp trip. Everything is confirmed now and I should be somewhere up on Mount Everest in end December.

I am still convincing myself that everything will be alright… the coldness will not be that cold… brrr….

Anyway, Team Tiger Balm ACTIVE will only announce the winner to represent them for the New York City Marathon 2011 next week. I hope I still stand a chance to represent them as I really want to run this marathon.

The ‘LIKE’s for each video are not the final scores and there will be other judging criteria, hence, I hope I can score more points in the other areas. Crossing my fingers now…

The assignments season has come and everybody is busy with assignments and more assignments. Once we get passed this season, Spring will be here and it will be time to P A R T A Y !!!!

If you are not aware, I am in the running for the one spot to represent Team Tiger Balm ACTIVE to go to New York City for the NYC 2011 Marathon in November.

One of the criteria is to gather as many ‘LIKES’ on the Team Tiger Balm ACTIVE’s Facebook page. There are seven finalists in total and all of us have reasons to go.

Mr Active is born with the ability to relieve muscle pain. When Mr Active is around, you bet you will recover in no time to play, to run or to fly!

Mr Active goes around taking the MRT, helping out those who are tired from all the standing.

Mr Active also visits the Raffles Place. His ability works like magic on the sore necks as well!

Mr Active hopes to go to New York City to help out those in need in NYC!
